Ghost Pipefish

Solenostomus

Idenification:

The ghost pipefish can be up to 15cm long. Similar to the pipefishes, the ghost pipefishes have pelvic fins, prominent/spiny dorsal fin and star-shape plates on the skin.

The ghost pipefishes often float with their snout downwards in a motionless manner against background making almost impossible to find.

Distribution:

They are usually found in tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. In Australia, however, divers can often find the ghost pipefishes in Sydney during the summer months. Ornate ghost pipefishes have been found around Sydney, especially at Clifton Gardens, Bare Island and Kurnell since late 2015. This could be because of the changing in the Eastern Australian Current.
